Of Psychic Abilities, Statistics and Laying Horses

Being an ex-mathematician and ex-IT Systems Analyst, I decided to apply my skills to creating a system for laying horses.

After several false-starts, I finally created a system which consistently showed a profit.  The strike rate of the system varied between 85% and 87%.  However, every so often, the system would go through a losing period and a large proportion of my profits would be wiped out.  Strangely enough, just before the system went through a losing period, I got a ‘strange feeling’ that a losing period was just around the corner.

My grandmother was a clairvoyant and my grandfather was able to divine for water. I therefore made the assumption that I may have inherited some of their gifts.  As a result, I tried selecting losing horses using my psychic abilities alone.  Although my success rate wasn’t great, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had expected it be.  In fact, the strike rate was in the mid-80s and I was making a profit, albeit a small one.  The main problem was that my psychic abilities either didn’t ‘switch on’ at all or ‘switched on’ too late for me to profit by them.  As a result, I often had losing periods that almost totally wiped out my profits.

After a particularly bad losing period, I was on the point of giving up laying horses when I had an idea.  If using statistics wasn’t totally successful and if using my psychic abilities wasn’t totally successful either, how would a combination of the two fare?

So, I used my statistical methods to identify the horses to lay and I used my psychic abilities to eliminate possible winners i.e. those horses which would defy the statistics and go on to win anyway.

Surprise, surprise, my strike rate went up to over 93%.  My longest winning run more than doubled from 38 to 82.  In addition, although there were still losing periods, they were far less severe and lasted for shorter periods.  By way of an example, on 11 October 2006, my system selected 16 horses.  My psychic abilities eliminated 4 of them, two of which won and the other two came a close 3rd.

Having gained a degree in Chemistry and having worked in IT for over 30 years, I have problems believing in clairvoyance even though I work as a professional psychic.  Some people have asked me how, on the one hand, I can I work as a clairvoyant and, on the other hand, not be sure as to the existence of clairvoyance.  I have also been asked how I do what I do.  I can only answer in one way: ‘I don’t know’.  However, consider this:  Does the fact that you don’t know how a microwave works, internally, prevent you from using it to cook food?  Would your lack of belief in your TV prevent it from working correctly?

I don’t know whether clairvoyance exists.  If it does exist, I don’t know if it works.  However, what I do know is that since I combined my statistical system with whatever it is that I do, my strike rate has improved by an amount which is statistically significant and, my bank balance is much healthier as a result.
