Leicester’s hire and fire ‘em chairman Milan Mandaric is about to reveal the identity of the latest man who will be given the poisoned chalice of bringing success to the Walkers Stadium.
The former Portsmouth supremo took over the Foxes in early 2007 and simply expected to bring the same level of success to the club to which he did at Fratton Park when Harry Redknapp used his funding to turn the south coast outfit from a poor Championship side into a top Premiership outfit.
However, after seeing the club survive in the Championship by the skin of its teeth last summer, all the talk was about bringing in the right man to propel Leicester into the Premier League. Little did Mandaric realise at the time but he had the right man at his disposal right under his nose.
After Rob Kelly was axed Nigel Worthington was the caretaker boss who had ensured the club avoided a drop into the third tier of English football for the first time in its history. However, when it came to the crunch Mandaric opted to go for Martin Allen instead.
That proved to be an absolute disaster which lasted about a month in which Allen had spent a fortune bringing in players who would not be going on to play for the manager they signed for.
Gary Megson was brought in and lasted another month or so before he was enticed to the Premier League with Bolton, while Ian Holloway became the next manager after leaving his pressure-free post at Plymouth.
Holloway achieved Mandaric’s aim of getting the Foxes out of the Championship. But just like Lawrie McMenemy at Sunderland two decades ago, it was a downwards move into League One.
There was a possibility that Holloway would be kept on, but that lasted about a week after the end of the season before the trigger was pulled and a sixth manager was being sought in 16 months.
Mandaric is now looking for a man who can get the club out of League One and immediately launch a second successive promotion push for the Premier League the season after. It will not be an easy task but, as he says, he will leave no stone unturned.
All the signs are that Worthington will be enticed back to the Walkers Stadium from his current position as Northern Ireland manager to finish the job he should have been given the chance to 12 months ago.
He had guided Norwich to the top flight in the past, kept the Foxes up in the first place, before almost leading the Northern Irish side to a very unlikely place at the Euro 2008 finals.
Whether people say handing Worthington the job would be like Mandaric admitting he made a mistake is one risk worth making if he does not want to spend a minute longer than Leicester have to in League One.
