Josh Laytheodds
Now an independent writer for www.laytheodds.com, I was initially only betting on football for fun at school with my friends and generally did well. I must have been about twelve when my dad, an accountant for a large insurance company in London at the time, entered me in a World Cup prediction competition with about 50 of his colleagues. I came second and, with the top three sharing the £1250 total prize money, won a lot of money for myself. >From then on, my dad often came to me on advice on correct scores and he won more than he lost.
As soon as I was old enough, I began betting in bookies myself and it all took on from there really. I've tried other sports apart from football, too, but wasn't anywhere near as successful, although at the time of writing, I'm studying horse racing a lot as I view my one-dimensional betting as a personal betting weakness.
Fortunately I was never what you'd call a 'mug punter'. I understood the concepts of good money management, looking for the biggest price and the importance of finding value very early on. Time passed and I'd currently call myself a part-time punter, although I use the term lightly as I do a lot of trading on betfair and play a little poker. The other part of my income comes from journalism and football coaching, mainly working with kids in academies.
Here is my Football Trading Manual!

On the main site (http://www.betting-on-soccer-strategy.co.uk/), the betting-on-soccer-strategy (The BOSS) is advertised as a “comprehensive betting strategy” that “puts you in firm control” and will “transform the way you bet forever”, giving the system a lot to live up to. When I contacted customer support, requesting permission to review The BOSS, I received a glad response from an organisation that seemed to have a lot of faith in this product.

The ‘Smart Money System’ describes itself as the “definitive answer to the question they're all asking...the question being, how can I make money from Betfair?” A bold statement indeed! For the past few weeks, I’ve been reviewing the system and have come to the conclusion that for the £47 the ‘Smart Money System’ costs, buyers are getting a bargain… The ‘Smart Money System’ is packed with profitable advice. Among other things, it teaches readers…

With the betting exchange phenomenon so huge now, everyone with access to the internet is capable of increasing their income through playing the role of the bookmaker, by laying horses. However, laying horses is harder than most people realise and takes most people years to work out how to profit successfully, until Easy Money From Losing Horses, that is.

When I saw claims that this product would allow you to “quit your day job... with a bank as small as £50,” my eyebrows raised. After a few conversations with the owner of Easy Trader Pro, I convinced him to allow me to test his system and was relieved to find that what is revealed in Easy Trader Pro is easily worth more than the £47 you pay on purchase.

The package comes complete with a 110 page manual, although it’s fair to say only half of these pages actually deal with the ‘nitty-gritty’ in discussing the betting exchange secrets Elliot uses. In addition to this, three calculators, which each perform calculations in a few seconds, which would otherwise take minutes, are included in the package.
Interview with Joseph Buchdahl

I expect the name Joseph Buchdahl, is familiar to many of you. Not only is he the author of the highly regarded book ‘Fixed Odds Sports Betting: Statistical Forecasting and Risk Management’, heavy, yet essential, reading for people looking to take their betting to the next level, he is also webmaster of football-data.co.uk, a site which charges a minimal fee for a plethora of football statistics over a wide database and owner of his own very successful football betting system (1x2betting.co.uk). I bought it when it only cost £10 (it’s now £25), and it was the best £10 I ever spent!

Later on, I tried out a few ideas, mostly mathematically based, since I don't know much about studying form and so on. I think I discovered for myself a form of the "favourite longshot bias" (long odds on shots tend to be more favourably priced), but in those days there was betting tax, and it was very hard to make money from betting ... I didn't make any, anyway, though I only bet tiny amounts.

This is to do with over/under betting. Generally speaking, it's not hard to find stats that will indicate whether a team scores or concedes many goals. Obviously when two teams with tight defences and poor attacks meet, the game tends to have few goals and vice-versa.
Tournament Trading Strategies

A strategy I used in the 2006 World Cup was to lay what I thought was an underpriced team, in Holland. That might sound like gambling and not trading, but by backing them to qualify from their group, then each of their second round games, using a progressive staking plan, I would have, at very worst, had a small loss if they went on to win the cup (but this would probably have been a profit as they were clearly underpriced in the outright market) and would have guaranteed a profit if they didn't win (which they didn't).
