BrasilNut’s Top 10 Best Moments of Poker in Films

10. The Sting

What’s so good about it?

‘You owe me 15 grand pal’. Cheating gone wrong as the good guy tries to cheat the cheater and runs into higher quads in rigged deck.

Floyd: Doyle, I KNOW I gave him four THREES. He had to make a SWITCH. We can’t let him get away with that.

Doyle Lonnegan: What was I supposed to do - call him for cheating better than me, in front of the others?

9. James Bond in Casino Royale - Final Scene

What’s so good about it?

Nut flush v middle full house v nut full house v straight flush, family pot all in! Some great suspence but we all knew who would win in the end! The probability of four players all going all in on river is so unbelievable but it still makes it fun to watch.

8. Titanic - Poker Scene

What’s so good about it?

Leo and his friend win the ticket in the Titanic in this game. The hands are realistic 2 pair vs full house. Personally, I would have preferred that they lost the hand so I wouldn’t have to watch the rest of the film and I could get back those 3 hours of my life…

7.  Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Cards Scene

What’s so good about it?

Hero loses £500k in a hand of three card brag (3 of a kind 6s also known as ‘prial’ to 3 of a kind 7s - extremely rare) and has one week to pay it off to mobsters. Very nice scenes of East End mob drinking/smoking in dim lighting and the agony of defeat.

6. Spider from Goodfellas

What’s so good about it?

Talk about overreacting!

5. ‘Trinity is my name’

What’s so good about it?

This takes place in the Wild West. I find this scene hilarious, particularly the ‘shuffling wars’ which is really outdated behaviour. This is a five-way pot full of monster hands and at showdown quad aces simply calls a bet???? Still makes the list because of its ‘old school feel’.

4.  Final Scene - Rounders

What’s so good about it?

This is the classic. There is the revenge element and the way its filmed is great.

3. Maverick - Final Hand

What’s so good about it?

This is a classic hand at the end of a Mississippi Riverboat poker tournament. Maverick has one card to a straight flush and calls all his stack without seeing the last card which is obviously the Ace of Spades giving him the ultimate nuts.

2. Rounders - First Hand

What’s so good about it?

The action starts are 3:36. This is where Matt Damon’s character loses his whole bankroll, worth of $30k to ‘Teddy KGB’. He has the 2nd nuts and loses to the nuts. The commentary is entertaining and the action is the most realistic in the whole list, none of this quads loses to straight flush bs we see earlier. The plot is also realistic in that a young kid loses his whole bankroll in one hand and you know his whole life will change and you’re curious to find out why. There is also the whole element of revenge…this scene has everything!

1. Cincinnati Kid v Lancey Howard- Final Hand

What’s so good about it?

The title holder of ‘best poker player in the world’ is disputed here. The lead up to the last hand is suspenseful and traumatic as all the money goes into the middle when ‘The Kid’ who has aces full of tens is up a potential straight flush. I love the build up to it and the way it was filmed to see the reactions from the audience.

Lancey Howard: Gets down to what it’s all about, doesn’t it? Making the wrong move at the right time.
Cincinnati Kid: Is that what it’s all about?
Lancey Howard: Like life, I guess. You’re good, kid, but as long as I’m around you’re second best. You might as well learn to live with it.
